Conference Scope SASAT 2008


To provide a common platform for clinicians, scientists and health care workers to discuss issues related to clinical and applied thrombosis and hemostasis. South Asians (Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and Sri Lankans) have very high incidence of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and Diabetes (Type-2) in comparison to any other ethnic group in the world. The prevalence of thrombo-embolic diseases is also very high. Cancer associated thrombosis, sepsis associated DIC and other disorders of hemostasis and thrombosis are under diagnosed warranting a timely assessment of the magnitude of these diseases. To create awareness, develop educational and preventive programs South Asian Society on Atherosclerosis and Thrombosis (SASAT) was formed in 1993. Since then, this organization has fostered periodic meetings, consensus development on the diagnosis and treatment of thrombosis and related disorders focusing on the standard of care in the subcontinent. Educational programs and training opportunities have been developed and expert opinions are provided.

SASAT 2008 focuses on following issues: Epidemiology, risk factors and management of venous thromboembolic disorders, cancer associated thrombosis, thrombocytopenia, vascular disorders, diabetes and hypertension and their association with thrombotic disorders; Risk factors and management of metabolic syndrome, coronary artery disease and stroke. Advances in the diagnosis and treatment modalities are updated periodically. SASAT provides a platform to have state of the art discussions with international and local experts on specific topics, focusing on the needs of various regions. Because of the ongoing developments in newer drugs for the treatment of thrombotic and vascular diseases, such topics as Low Molecular Weight Heparins, New AntiXa and AntiIIa Drugs and advances in anti platelet therapy are included. The topic of generic antithrombotic drugs is included with particular references to guidelines for the ethical development of these agents. SASATs aim is to harmonize the management modalities for thrombotic and vascular diseases in South Asia with diabetes, hypertension, cancer and womans health relevance to these diseases. An important mission is to educate and enhance the awareness and update the clinicians, scientist and allied health professionals.
